49ers Add 56-Game Starter Ahead of Playoffs Start

Given the way last year's postseason ended for the San Francisco 49ers, which was hampered by an injury to quarterback Brock Purdy and a subsequent injury to his backup.

Josh Johnson, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan understandably wants to be cautious about depth at every position on his roster.

he move comes as the defensive backfield has been weakened by a string of injuries, leaving the unit thin.

Cornerback Jason Verrett faced yet another hurdle in his bid to return to an NFL field following a series of injuries.

Verrett was on the 49ers' practice squad when he sustained a season-ending shoulder injury.

Mitchell, who played briefly with the 49ers in training camp before being released, will take Verrett's spot as the team's emergency cornerback.

In addition to Mitchell, the 49ers have added former Titans defensive lineman Sam Okuayinonu to their practice squad.

Okuayinonu, an undrafted free agent out of Maryland, appeared in six games for Tennessee last year.
